Best be a Guest at these October Fests

Eddy Fest

This is a gem of a festival. Our neighbour down the street, the King Eddy is putting on a 4- day musical showcase celebrating its grand re-opening. The musical talent includes some of Canada’s finest, from the sultry blues of Amos Garrett (Oct. 4th) to the rock and rollin’ females of Nice Horse (Oct 5th). The latter of the weekend includes the sweet sounds of Michael Bernard Fitzgerald (Oct. 6th) and the folk hummings of Astral Swans (Oct 7th).

When: October 8-15

Where: Various Locations in Calgary

Price: Range by day- Free-$60

This year over 70 authors are participating in the literary extravaganza that is Calgary’s WordFest. Over the course of 7 days, they will feature a Literary Death Match (Oct.10), an Adult Spelling Bee (Oct. 12) and of course countless workshops and showcases. Not to mention, a closing event with Polaris prize winner, the amazing Tanya Tegaq (Oct.15).

Sweet Tunage Experiences

Reuben and the Dark

Where: Jack Singer Concert Hall

Colter Wall

When: October 19, starts at 7 p.m

Where: MacEwan Hall

Colter Wall is the husky voice of the Canadian Cowboy. His stories are as cut-throat as that ole’ Saskatchewan farmland and his voice is ice cold as it melts in your ears. This guy’s got hundreds of years of history seeping through his songs and the best part is, he’s only 23. This is one you do not want to miss.

A spooky delivery from the Livery

When: October 5,6,12,13,20,21,25-28,30,31 - 7pm to Midnight

Where: The Stampede Grandstand Building

Price: $30 for General Admission

Well, we never thought we’d see the day that this Calgarian Halloween staple would ever end. But alas, this year is the final year of the hauntings of ScreamFest. Packed with the usual terrifying zombies, creepy clowns and grim reapers, a stroll through those haunted houses is anything but quiet. Even if it’s just to say farewell, definitely checkout ScreamFests last frightening hurrah.

The Harvest Pumpkin Hunt

When: Every weekend in October

Where: Butterfield Acres

Price: $15-$16

The Harvest Pumpkin Hunt at Butterfield Acres is the perfect outing to explore with the family. With a tractor wagon ride through the farm, the hunt for your favourite pumpkin begins. After you’ve found the best one, you get to decorate it and visit with the animals. This is a great tradition to share with your loved ones.

CUFF Presents 12 hours of Halloween Movies

When: October 27-28, starts at 7 p.m

Where: The Globe Cinema

Price: $20

The Calgary Underground Film Fest is putting on all-nighter horror movie marathon and you are invited. It begins at 7 p.m and ends at 7 a.m the next morning with a free breakfast for anyone who can make it all the way through the night. There is a costume contest at midnight, prizes throughout the night, and the bar is open until 2 a.m. The best thing about this is you can stay for the whole marathon or you can just drop in and out when you feel like it. It’s guaranteed you will scream, laugh and have a frighteningly good time.

Enjoy the activities,

Livery Girl
